Writing a Food Truck Business Plan a Lender Will Actually Read

A food truck business plan a lender will read covers the sections SBA guidance lists for a traditional plan: executive summary, company description, market analysis, management, product line, marketing, a funding request, and financial projections. SBA's lending rule lets lenders weigh credit history, cash flow, and any equity or collateral, so the funding request and projections deserve the most work.

A lender reading your plan is not grading your menu. SBA's own lending rule lets lenders weigh your credit history, the earnings or cash flow of the business, and any equity or collateral (13 CFR 120.150). A food truck business plan earns attention when its funding request and projections answer those questions with real numbers. Earlier than that? Start with how to start a food trailer business.

Lender paperwork and partner options are on our food trailer financing page, and our guide to how operators pay for a truck or trailer covers the funding paths. Lenders set their own requirements, so ask yours what it wants to see before you write.

Build & Price Your Trailer

This article is general information, not tax, legal, or financial advice. Eastcoast Concessions does not provide tax advice, does not guarantee any tax savings, and does not underwrite, approve, or set rates for financing. Tax treatment and loan eligibility depend on your situation — confirm with your CPA or lender before you buy.

What SBA guidance says a business plan contains

The U.S. Small Business Administration describes two formats: a traditional plan and a lean startup plan. SBA says lenders and investors commonly request the traditional plan (SBA, Plan your business).

SBA lists the common traditional sections as:

SBA says you can use the sections that fit your business. If you have not settled whether you are buying a truck or a trailer, decide that first, because it changes every number in the plan. Our comparison of new, used, and custom-built food trucks and trailers walks through that choice.

What an SBA lender is allowed to weigh

Federal rules require an SBA loan applicant to be creditworthy, and they let lenders consider the applicant's credit score or credit history, the business's earnings or cash flow, and any equity or collateral (13 CFR 120.150).

SBA's 7(a) program can fund machinery and equipment purchases. You apply through a participating lender, not through SBA, and SBA says the contents of the application vary with the loan size and the lender (SBA, 7(a) loans). That is the practical reason to call the lender before you write: its document list is the real outline for your plan.

Building the funding request around a real build schedule

SBA says a funding request should state how much you need, what each dollar is for, and whether you want debt or equity (SBA). For a custom trailer, the build schedule decides when that money leaves your account.

On an Eastcoast Concessions build, the published terms run in stages:

  1. A $495 Virtual Blueprint design fee to begin design.
  2. A 25% deposit at order, with the $495 credited toward it.
  3. A further 25% four weeks after the deposit.
  4. The remaining 50% balance at pickup. Cards are not accepted for the final payment.

Our terms quote approximately 12–14 weeks to completion from drawing approval, and custom work can run longer. Count your opening date from drawing approval, not from the deposit. Our food trailers start at $39,500, and our published food-trailer range is $55,000–$95,000. Our breakdown of what a custom concession trailer costs explains where a build lands in that band.

One line a trailer plan needs that a truck plan does not: every trailer is picked up in person from our shop in Wayne, NJ, so the plan needs a tow vehicle that can pull it home.

Market analysis for a mobile unit

SBA's market-research questions are demand, market size, economic indicators, location, saturation, and pricing (SBA). The North American Industry Classification System lists mobile food services as code 722330 (U.S. Census Bureau, NAICS), which is the code to use when you pull industry figures.

Location rules are local. New Jersey's retail food code defines a servicing area as the base a mobile unit returns to for cleaning, waste disposal, refilling water tanks and ice bins, and boarding food (N.J.A.C. 8:24). Monmouth County's mobile retail food application asks for servicing area information (Monmouth County Health Department). Name your servicing area in the plan. Outside New Jersey, check your own state and county health department.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a business plan to finance a food trailer?

It depends on the lender. SBA says lenders and investors commonly request a traditional business plan, and that SBA 7(a) application contents vary by loan size and lender. Ask your lender what it requires before you write.

How many years of projections should a food truck business plan include?

SBA's guidance suggests a five-year financial outlook, with quarterly or monthly projections for the first year, matched to your funding request.

Does Eastcoast Concessions approve financing?

No. Financing is provided by third-party lenders. Eastcoast Concessions does not underwrite, approve, or set rates.
