Before you pay for any of the used food trucks for sale you find, check three records: the title history on the federal NMVTIS database, open safety recalls on NHTSA's VIN lookup, and the kitchen's fire paperwork. That means suppression and hood-cleaning tags, extinguisher tags, and the propane inspection record a fire inspector will ask to see.
A used food truck is two purchases at once: a vehicle and a working kitchen. Get every answer below as a document before money changes hands.
| Check | What fails it |
|---|---|
| Title history (NMVTIS report) | A junk, salvage, or flood brand, or an insurance total-loss record |
| Safety recalls (NHTSA VIN lookup) | Any unrepaired recall on that VIN |
| Suppression and hood tags | In Ringwood, New Jersey, no service in the past six months |
| Propane | In Ringwood, New Jersey, no annual LP-gas record or no LP-gas alarm |
| Sinks | In Texas, no handwashing sink or no three-compartment sink |
Still deciding between a truck and a towed unit? Our comparison of a food truck versus a food trailer lays out the tradeoffs, and the used trailer inspection guide covers a unit with no engine. New builds are on our food trailers for sale page.
This article is general information, not tax, legal, or financial advice. Tax treatment and loan eligibility depend on your situation — confirm with your CPA or lender before you buy.
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, run under the U.S. Department of Justice, reports a vehicle's title and brand history, its most recent reported odometer reading, any insurance total-loss determination, and any transfer to a junk or salvage yard. A brand such as "junk," "salvage," or "flood" is assigned by a state and follows the vehicle.
Then enter the 17-character VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. It lists unrepaired safety recalls only. It skips safety recalls more than 15 years old and recalls from small manufacturers, so an older chassis can come back clean without being clean.
Fire inspection is local. In Ringwood, New Jersey, the inspector treats the whole vehicle as a premises under the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and asks for a hood-cleaning report and a Kitchen System Report (NJFA Form 17A), each within the past six months. A K-type extinguisher is required with deep fryers or solid-fuel cooking, plus a mounted 2A:10BC extinguisher. Missing tags mean the service has to be done before that inspection.
Ringwood, New Jersey, caps propane tanks at 125 pounds, requires cylinders attached to the vehicle, requires an LP-gas alarm, and asks for an annual LP-gas inspection record. Generators sit at least 10 feet from the vehicle while running. The same inspection checks cylinders for rust, dents, and leaks, so check them yourself first.
In Texas, a mobile food unit needs a handwashing sink, a three-compartment sink for washing, rinsing, and sanitizing, and a central preparation facility or other fixed food establishment to operate from. In Massachusetts, a food truck needs a separate Board of Health permit in each municipality where it operates. There, a truck that passed in one town has not passed in the next.
A trailer has no engine, so the vehicle checks shrink to axles, brakes, and hitch. The tradeoff: you need a vehicle rated to tow it. If no used unit passes, Eastcoast Concessions builds trailers to order and quotes approximately 12–14 weeks from drawing approval, with pickup at our shop in Wayne, New Jersey. We build to the applicable code; your local inspector makes the final call. Our guide to writing a food truck business plan covers putting that timeline in front of a lender.
